Researchers from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas, report that obese adults who use a continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) machine lose weight more quickly than those who do not. Their findings were presented in New Orleans at Endocrine 2019 and are preliminary until they are peer reviewed and published in a medical journal. However, the results from the study may give other dieting adults motivation to start losing weight.
Researchers analyzed the effects of CPAP use on weight and body composition in 12 patients. They found that the patients who used a CPAP machine lost more fat and gained more lean body mass than those who did not. Researchers hypothesized that this could be a result of a positive metabolic outcome. This is the first study to prove the potential benefit of CPAP use for dieting adults.
The researchers noted that adherence to CPAP therapy and dietary changes are closely related to weight loss. In addition, CPAP use and diagnosis were associated with significant weight loss. The results, however, remain mixed. Larger studies are needed to determine whether or not the benefits of CPAP use and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity may differ. However, regardless of the results of this trial, the focus should remain on lifestyle and weight management.
While CPAP does appear to boost weight loss for dieting adults, weight gain remains a problem. The underlying causes of OSA are multi-factorial and cannot be attributed to CPAP use alone. There are many hypotheses regarding how CPAP can affect weight loss. One possible explanation is that it reduces the amount of sympathetic activity, resulting in lower energy expenditure and fat-burning.
